What is Pilates Reformer?
Pilates Reformer is an equipment-based form of exercise using a bed-like machine with springs, pulleys and a sliding carriage. It provides adjustable resistance to help build strength, improve flexibility and enhance alignment.
The Reformer also offers support and feedback, making exercises more accessible, especially for those with injuries or limited mobility. With a wider range of movements than mat-based Pilates, it helps you tone, stretch and move with control.
What is Pilates Matwork?
Pilates Matwork is a form of exercise performed on a mat using your own body weight, sometimes with small equipment like resistance bands, balls or rings. It focuses on controlled movement, breath and alignment to build core strength, improve posture, and increase flexibility.
Matwork is accessible to all ages and fitness levels. It helps develop balance, coordination and body awareness, and is an excellent foundation for overall strength and mobility.
Which is better: Matwork or Reformer Pilates?
Matwork and Reformer Pilates each offer distinct benefits and work best together.
Matwork builds core strength and body awareness using your own body weight, making it ideal for beginners and anyone learning the basics. Reformer Pilates uses a machine to add resistance and support, offering more variety and intensity, great for targeting specific muscles, improving flexibility and aiding rehabilitation.
For the best results, mixing both gives you a well-rounded Pilates routine that builds strength, mobility and control.
What should I wear to a Pilates class?
We recommend wearing comfortable, stretchy clothing that allows you to move freely, similar to what you would wear for any form of exercise. Non-slip socks are required for safety and hygiene. If you don’t have a pair (or need a new one), non-slip socks are available to purchase at reception.
How early should I arrive for my Pilates class?
We recommend arriving at least 5 minutes before your class starts. This gives you time to settle in, set up your equipment and start your session feeling calm and prepared.
Can I attend Pilates if I am pregnant?
Yes, Pilates can be highly beneficial during pregnancy. All our instructors hold specialist qualifications in Prenatal and Postnatal Pilates, ensuring a safe, supportive environment for expectant and new mothers. Please inform us before booking so we can ensure you are placed in a suitable class or recommend a one-to-one session. All exercises will be safely adapted to support you throughout your pregnancy.

Is it recommended to take a private Pilates session before my first class?

This allows your instructor to assess your individual needs, introduce you to the foundational movements and ensure you feel confident before joining a group class.
